FAQs

What does laser treatment do to your skin?

Laser treatment delivers controlled light energy into the skin at specific wavelengths. Depending on the type of laser used, it can target pigmented cells, stimulate collagen production, reduce the appearance of blood vessels, or remove thin layers of damaged skin to encourage new cell growth. The specific effect depends on the laser wavelength, intensity and the skin concern being treated. Your clinician will explain how the recommended laser works for your particular concern during your consultation.

How do lasers work on skin?

Different lasers use different wavelengths of light, and each wavelength is absorbed by a specific target in the skin. For example, some wavelengths are absorbed by melanin (pigment), others by haemoglobin in blood vessels, and others by water in skin cells. When the laser energy is absorbed, it converts to heat, which can break down unwanted pigment, reduce visible blood vessels, or create controlled micro-injuries that stimulate the skin’s natural repair and collagen production processes.

What are the benefits of laser treatment on the face?

Facial laser treatments may help address a range of skin concerns, including:

  • Reducing the appearance of sun damage, age spots and uneven pigmentation
  • Improving skin texture, including fine lines and enlarged pores
  • Reducing visible redness, broken capillaries and vascular concerns
  •  Supporting the reduction of acne-related concerns and associated scarring
  • Stimulating collagen production, which may help improve overall skin tone and firmness over time

The specific benefits depend on the type of laser used and the individual’s skin. Results vary between patients and are not guaranteed. Your clinician will discuss realistic expectations during your consultation.

Is laser treatment safe for all skin types?

Not all lasers are suitable for all skin types. Some lasers, particularly those targeting pigment at shorter wavelengths, may carry a higher risk of side effects for darker skin tones (Fitzpatrick types IV to VI), including the potential for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation. At Advantage Skin Clinic, we use multiple laser modules suited to a range of skin types. For example, the Nd:YAG long pulse laser operates at a wavelength that is generally considered more suitable for darker skin tones than other lasers. Your clinician will assess your skin type during your consultation and recommend the most appropriate option.

Can you have laser treatment while pregnant or breastfeeding?

Laser treatments are generally not performed during pregnancy as a precautionary measure. There is limited research on the effects of cosmetic laser procedures during pregnancy, and most clinical guidelines recommend deferring treatment until after delivery. If you are breastfeeding, some laser treatments may be considered depending on the type of laser and treatment area, though this is assessed on a case-by-case basis. Please discuss your circumstances with your clinician, who can advise on appropriate timing.

Is there an age limit for laser skin treatment?

There is no strict upper age limit for laser skin treatment, and patients across a wide age range may be suitable candidates depending on their skin type, medical history and treatment goals. For younger patients, suitability is assessed individually, and parental or guardian consent is required for patients under 18. A consultation with one of our registered doctors or dermal clinicians will determine whether laser treatment is appropriate for your specific situation.

Can laser treatment cause skin cancer?

Cosmetic lasers used in skin clinics do not emit ultraviolet (UV) radiation and are not associated with an increased risk of developing skin cancer. The wavelengths used in cosmetic laser treatments are different from those in UV light, which is the primary environmental cause of skin cancer. If you have a history of skin cancer or are currently being treated for a skin condition, your clinician will take this into account when assessing your suitability for laser treatment.

Can laser treatment permanently damage your skin?

When performed by appropriately trained and qualified practitioners using suitable laser settings, the risk of permanent skin damage is low. However, all laser treatments carry some degree of risk. Potential side effects can include temporary redness, swelling, changes in skin pigmentation, and in rare cases, scarring. These risks are minimised through thorough pre-treatment assessment, appropriate laser selection, and adherence to aftercare instructions. Your clinician will discuss all potential risks with you before proceeding with any treatment.

Is laser treatment safe for sensitive skin?

Patients with sensitive skin may still be candidates for certain laser treatments, though the approach may need to be adjusted. Your clinician will consider your skin’s reactivity, any history of allergic reactions, and current skincare routine when determining suitability. Lower energy settings, non-ablative lasers, or alternative treatment modalities may be recommended for patients with heightened skin sensitivity. A patch test may also be performed prior to your first full treatment session.

Can you have laser treatment if you have a skin condition like eczema or psoriasis?

Active inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis in the treatment area may affect your suitability for certain laser procedures. Laser treatment on actively inflamed or compromised skin can increase the risk of adverse reactions. In most cases, your clinician will recommend that the condition is stable and well-managed before considering laser treatment. If you have a diagnosed skin condition, please inform your clinician during your consultation so they can assess your suitability and advise on the most appropriate course of action.

How do I prepare my skin for laser treatment?

Preparation will vary depending on the type of laser treatment, but general guidelines include:

  • Avoiding direct sun exposure and tanning (including spray tans) for at least 2 to 4 weeks prior to treatment
  • Discontinuing use of retinoids, AHAs, BHAs and other active exfoliating products for 5 to 7 days beforehand, or as directed by your clinician
  • Informing your clinician of any medications, supplements or recent cosmetic treatments
  • Keeping the treatment area clean and free of makeup on the day of your appointment

Your clinician will provide specific pre-treatment instructions tailored to the laser being used and your individual skin type.

    Does laser treatment hurt?

Comfort levels during laser treatment vary depending on the type of laser, the treatment area and individual pain tolerance. Most patients describe the sensation as a warm prickling, light snapping or mild stinging feeling. Some lasers produce minimal discomfort, while more intensive treatments (such as ablative resurfacing) may involve greater sensation. Depending on the type of laser a topical anaesthetic cream or cooling gel topical anaesthetic cream or cooling gel can be applied before treatment to help manage discomfort. Your clinician will discuss what to expect for your specific treatment.

Can I wear makeup after laser treatment?

It is generally recommended to avoid applying makeup for at least 24 to 48 hours following laser treatment, though this may vary depending on the type of laser used. After ablative treatments such as CO2 resurfacing, you may need to wait longer (up to 7 to 10 days) to allow the skin to heal before reintroducing cosmetic products. When you do resume wearing makeup, choose mineral-based, fragrance-free and non-comedogenic products to minimise the risk of irritation. Your clinician will provide specific guidance based on your treatment.

How do I care for my skin after laser treatment?

General aftercare following laser treatment includes:

        • Applying a broad-spectrum SPF 50+ sunscreen daily and reapplying every 2 hours when outdoors
        • Using a gentle, hydrating cleanser and moisturiser
        •  Avoiding direct heat sources such as saunas, steam rooms and hot showers for 48 hours
        • Not picking at, scratching or exfoliating any treated areas as the skin heals
        • Avoiding strenuous exercise for 24 to 48 hours post-treatment

Your clinician will provide detailed aftercare instructions specific to the laser used and your skin type. Following these instructions is important for supporting your skin’s healing process.

What skincare products should I use after laser treatment?

In the days immediately following laser treatment, a simplified skincare routine is generally recommended. This typically includes a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser, a hydrating moisturiser (ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and ceramides can help support the skin barrier), and a broad-spectrum SPF 50+ sunscreen. Avoid active ingredients such as retinoids, vitamin C serums, AHAs and BHAs until your clinician advises it is safe to reintroduce them, which is usually after 3 to 7 days depending on the treatment. Your clinician may also recommend specific medical-grade products suited to your skin.

Which laser treatment is right for me?

The most appropriate laser treatment depends on several factors, including your skin type, the concern you want to address, the depth and severity of the concern, and your tolerance for downtime. At Advantage Skin Clinic, we offer multiple laser and light-based options, including IPL, ClearSkin Pro, CO2 fractional resurfacing, Nd:YAG, iPixel and ClearLift™. Rather than a one-size-fits-all approach, your clinician will assess your skin and recommend the laser or combination of treatments most suited to your goals.

Can I combine different laser treatments?

In some cases, your clinician may recommend combining different laser treatments or pairing laser treatment with complementary procedures such as chemical peels, skin needling or LED light therapy. Combination approaches may be considered when addressing multiple skin concerns simultaneously or when a staged treatment plan is likely to be more effective. The timing and sequencing of combined treatments is determined by your clinician to help ensure each treatment is performed safely and at appropriate intervals.

Can laser treatment be done on the body as well as the face?

Yes, many laser treatments can be performed on areas of the body beyond the face. Common treatment areas include the neck, décolletage, hands, arms, legs and back. The suitability of a particular laser for body treatment depends on the skin concern, the body area and the specific laser being used. Some areas of the body may respond differently to treatment compared to facial skin due to differences in skin thickness and healing characteristics. Your clinician will advise on whether body treatment is appropriate during your consultation.
