SKIN CONCERN:

Pigmentation Treatment

Pigmentation is the presence of excess and uneven melanin in the skin. This occurs when melanocyte cells become damaged due to trauma, sun exposure, inflammation or hormones.

Pigmentation will generally occur on the face, neck and decolletage. Pigmentation manifests in multiple ways, which includes sunspots, freckles, birthmarks, melasma, chloasma and seborrheic keratosis.

Hyperpigmentation occurs when the pigmentation is darker in appearance to the rest of the skin. This occurs when the melanocytes in the deeper layers of the skin overproduce melanin. The overproduction of melanin results in the darker skin patches appearing over the skin’s surface.

Hypopigmentation occurs when the pigmentation is whiter/paler than the rest of the skin. This may include vitiligo, albinism or may be the result of an injury to the skin.

FAQs

Skin pigmentation disorders can be classified into two main types: hyperpigmentation, where excess pigment causes darker patches on the skin, and hypopigmentation, where a reduction in pigment leads to lighter areas.

Common skin pigmentation disorders include:

  • Dermapen Skin Needling — Dermapen is a hand-held device fitted with fine needles that create tiny micro-injuries on the skin’s surface. These micro-injuries stimulate the body’s natural healing process, promoting collagen and elastin production to reduce scars and rejuvenate the skin.
  • Laser Therapy (IPL or Co2) — We offer advanced laser treatments for pigmentation issues. Our carbon dioxide (CO2) laser therapy targets and removes layers of damaged skin while stimulating collagen production. We also provide IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) Therapy, a non-invasive treatment that uses high-intensity light to reduce sun damage, age spots and rosacea.
  • Dermalux LED Light Therapy — This non-invasive treatment utilises light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to promote skin rejuvenation by stimulating cellular activity. It helps accelerate cell regeneration, resulting in improved skin texture.
  • Chemical Peels and Medi Facials — These treatments involve applying a chemical solution to the skin, which causes the outer layer to exfoliate and shed, revealing smoother skin underneath.
  • Hydro-Dermabrasion — It combines exfoliation with the infusion of hydrating serums to rejuvenate the skin. Using a specialised handpiece, this treatment harnesses the healing power of water to stimulate the skin’s natural regeneration process and address uneven pigmentation and age spots.
  • Targeted skincare products — At our pigmentation treatment clinic in Wollongong, we stock a range of skincare products from La Roche-Posay, Environ and Aspect Dr. Reach out to us to explore our selection and receive personalised recommendations.

It depends on the type of treatment and the severity of your pigmentation. Our medical team will craft a tailored treatment plan according to your goals and needs. For laser therapy such as IPL, you may need four to six sessions spaced at least two weeks apart. Dermapen skin needling treatments may require three to eight sessions with intervals of two to eight weeks while chemical peels involve around three to six treatments for optimal results.

Most pigmentation treatments in Wollongong can cause temporary side effects, such as swelling, redness and sensitivity. In some cases, you may experience mild peeling or flaking as your skin heals and regenerates. Our team will provide detailed post-treatment care instructions to help minimise potential complications.
