Skin cancer checks in Wollongong

With sun exposure being the cause of approximately 99% of non-melanoma skin cancers and 95% of melanoma cases, regular skin cancer checks are essential for early detection, management and prevention.

At our skin cancer clinic in Wollongong, medical GPs and trained Melanographers work together to conduct thorough, non-invasive skin examinations to detect and diagnose early-stage melanoma and other slower-growing skin cancers, such as Basal Cell Carcinomas (BCCs) and Squamous Cell Carcinomas (SCCs).

To enhance our diagnostic accuracy, we utilise DermEngine total body photography. This AI-driven dermatology software provides detailed, high-resolution images of the skin, allowing for precise monitoring and analysis of any changes, which facilitates the early detection and management of skin cancer.

FAQ’S

Why is it important to go for regular skin checks?

Regular skin checks are crucial for the early detection of skin cancers, which can improve skin cancer management and outcomes. Considering Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, dermatologists recommend annual skin examinations. However, those at higher risk or with a history of skin cancer may need checks every three to six months.

What types of skin cancers do you look out for?

As a leading skin cancer clinic in Wollongong, we focus on detecting various types of skin cancers, including Melanoma, Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Our skin cancer checks are designed to identify early signs of these cancers, enabling timely intervention and the creation of a skin cancer management plan.

What are some of the skin indicators you look for to detect the presence of cancerous cells?

During skin cancer checks, we assess for key indicators of potentially cancerous cells, including asymmetry, irregular borders, unusual colour changes and diameters exceeding 6mm. We also examine new growths, persistent sores and lesions that appear darker than others. Additionally, our doctors can evaluate benign lesions like skin tags, moles or warts for cosmetic removal during the check.

What can I expect at the appointment?

Our medical practitioners and/or Melanographers will inspect your skin using a dermatoscope or our DermEngine imagery system to check for any signs of skin cancer and examine any moles or suspicious spots — which may be biopsied and sent to a pathologist to determine its exact nature.

How long does a skin cancer check take?

A skin check at our skin cancer clinic in Wollongong is relatively quick, generally lasting about 15 to 30 minutes.

How do I prepare for my skin cancer check-up?

Consider the following tips:

  • Bring medical records of prior skin treatments, surgeries or diagnoses.
  • Note any new spots or changes in your skin you’ve observed.
  • Remove nail polish so your doctor can examine your nails as part of the skin check.
  • Come makeup-free to ensure nothing obscures the view of any potential issues.
What happens after the appointment?

Following your appointment, your doctor will inform you about the findings of your skin examination and explain the process if a biopsy is required. In cases where skin cancer is detected, you will be informed about the various treatment options.

Who is at an increased risk of skin cancer?

At least 2 in 3 Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer in their lifetime. However, those at increased risk typically exhibit the following characteristics:

  • Pale or freckled skin
  • Actively having tanned, sunbaked or used solariumsUnprotected
