Book a Skin Check in Wollongong
We are the first clinic in NSW, and one of the first in the world, to introduce OptimaScan.
OptimaScan is a new photographic and lighting system which provides standardised lighting and body positioning to record 108 48-megapixel photos of different parts of the body. It does this by rotating around you for 1 minute, taking photos as it travels.
The resulting photos are stitched together to form a photographic 3D model of your body, showing most regions in high detail.
The photos are uploaded to the DermEngine skin photography platform, which allows them to be viewed easily by both you and your skin cancer doctor. Each time your body is photographed, DermEngine will use AI to check for differences and notify of suspicious new and changing lesions.
If you’re searching for skin cancer screening, mole checks, full body skin mapping or the most advanced skin imaging technology, OptimaScan gives you unmatched accuracy and peace of mind.

What is DermEngine Total Body Photography?
DermEngine Total Body Photography in Wollongong is attended by a trained nurse who provides a full body skin check assisted by intelligent dermatology software for the imaging, documentation and analysis of skin conditions, including skin cancer, powered by artificial intelligence (AI) provided by DermEngine. It is the most advanced imaging, documentation and diagnostic solution for skin conditions such as skin cancer. DermEngine skin checks are designed to detect and diagnose early-stage melanoma and other slower-growing skin cancers such as Basal Cell Carcinomas (BCCs) and Squamous Cell Carcinomas (SCCs).

Most appointments take approximately 30-45 minutes, depending on whether a full-body or targeted scan is required.

Who is suitable for a DermEngine skin check?
While everybody is suitable for a DermEngine skin check, from newborns to older adults, it is recommended for individuals who meet the criteria below:
- Numerous moles — People with a significant number of moles (more than 50) on their bodies are at higher risk for changes that could indicate skin cancer.
- Personal history — If you have had skin cancer before, regular monitoring with DermEngine total body imaging can help detect any recurrence early.
- Family history of skin cancer — A family history of skin cancer may increase your risk, making it important to have regular, detailed skin assessments in Wollongong.
- Large moles — Moles larger than 1 cm in diameter should be regularly monitored for changes, which DermEngine total body imaging can document precisely.
- Extensive sun damage or history of sunbed use — Excessive exposure to UV rays, whether from the sun or artificial sources, can increase the risk of skin cancer. DermEngine’s total body photography software analyses the images taken to detect and monitor changes over time, allowing for early intervention and more effective skin health management.
How does DermEngine help detect skin cancer?
DermEngine supports skin cancer detection by capturing high-quality images of your skin. It highlights small changes in lesion size, shape or structure, allowing these areas to be reviewed more closely during follow-up appointments. It also creates a virtual 3D body map that can help identify new lesions that were not present at earlier visits.
Can pregnant women have total body photography skin checks?
Absolutely. OptimaScan is safe during pregnancy because it does not involve radiation, dyes, or any invasive procedures.
Is a DermEngine skin check painful?
No, a DermEngine skin check is not painful. Our team will do everything possible to ensure your comfort during the appointment.
How often should I get a DermEngine skin check?
It is recommended that you undergo a DermEngine total body imaging check annually. If a skin cancer diagnosis is made, more frequent skin checks may be recommended.
Do I need to prepare in any way before my appointment?
We recommend avoiding heavy makeup, fake tan, or moisturisers on the day, as these can obscure imaging. Otherwise, no special preparation is needed.
How is DermEngine Total Body Photography different from other skin imaging techniques?
DermEngine’s full body imaging provides a more thorough, efficient and technologically advanced solution compared to traditional skin imaging techniques by leveraging:
- Innovative technology — DermEngine uses artificial intelligence to support full body imaging and recognise subtle skin changes that may indicate early stages of cancer or other dermatological conditions.
- Integrated tools — The DermEngine platform includes streamlined features like lesion matching and tracking, which help monitor skin changes over time, enhancing the ability to track the progression or improvement of skin conditions.
What’s the difference between skin checks and total body photography?
The main difference between skin checks and total body photography is their scope and purpose. Skin checks examine specific moles, lesions or abnormalities closely, often using a hand-held device, to determine if they need further testing. On the other hand, total body photography captures images of nearly all the skin’s surface, providing a baseline that can help track changes over time, such as new moles or alterations in existing ones.
What happens after my appointment for DermEngine in Wollongong?
After your DermEngine appointment, the nurse reviews the images to detect any changes or new lesions and generates a detailed report. If they identify suspicious changes, you may need to return for a follow-up visit or undergo a biopsy for further examination. Based on the findings, they will discuss treatment options with you and arrange ongoing monitoring to address any changes in your skin health.
How can I prepare for a DermEngine Total Body Photography session?
Before your DermEngine appointment, here are some steps you can take to prepare:
- Remove makeup, skincare and jewellery.
- Tie your hair into a bun to ensure clear images of the neck and back.
- Choose loose, comfortable clothing that is easy to remove.
Are there any risks associated with total body photography?
No, DermEngine full body imaging is considered a safe and pain-free skin check. If you have concerns about the process, please discuss them with our medical team during your initial skin consultation.
What happens if a new or changing lesion is found?
If a new or changing lesion is found, the nurse examines it in detail, documents it and refers it to a dermatologist or a clinic doctor for review and possible biopsy. Depending on the results, they may schedule follow-up appointments to monitor or remove the lesion.
Is DermEngine Total Body Photography safe?
Yes. DermEngine full body imaging is a safe, non-invasive imaging process. It uses standard clinical photography and does not involve radiation or UV exposure. Your images are captured in a private setting and stored securely for assessment and ongoing comparison by your medical practitioner.
Are follow up scans necessary?
For most people, follow up scans are recommended annually, but if you have high-risk features or rapidly changing lesions, we may suggest more frequent scans.
Does DermEngine Total Body Photography replace a physical exam by a doctor?
No. DermEngine full body imaging is not a standalone diagnostic tool and should not replace a physical exam by a physician. Additionally, certain areas of the body cannot be imaged accurately, such as the scalp and within some skin folds, so these regions may still require direct physical examination.
Is DermEngine Total Body Photography available for children or teenagers?
Yes, this service is suitable for patients of all ages, including newborns and young adults.
Will I be given access to my images?
Yes. If requested, we can provide copies of your images or reports for your personal records or for sharing with other healthcare providers.
